Retirement Village vs Rest Home: What's the Difference?

A lot of people use the terms retirement village and rest home interchangeably. They are not the same thing, and knowing the difference helps you make the right decision for where you are in life right now.
What is a retirement village?
A retirement village is a community for people who are still independent and want to enjoy their retirement years with less hassle. At Longridge you purchase the right to occupy your own standalone villa under a licence to occupy agreement. This is the standard model used by retirement villages across New Zealand and is governed by the Retirement Villages Act 2003. You do not own the land title, but the villa is your home in every practical sense.
You keep your own routines, come and go as you please, bring your pets, park the motorhome, and have family to stay. The weekly fee covers exterior maintenance, rates, insurance and access to shared facilities like the clubhouse, gym and village van. Your villa has its own driveway, patio and garden and sits on 60 acres of open countryside in Paeroa with Coromandel views.

What is a rest home?
A rest home, sometimes called a care home or aged care facility, is for people who need more day-to-day support. It typically offers 24-hour nursing care, help with meals, medication, showering and mobility. Most residents have their own room but share common areas and receive a higher level of assistance with daily life.
Rest homes are not retirement villages. They serve a different purpose at a different stage of life.
The main differences
A retirement village is for people who are active and independent and want to stay that way. A rest home is for people whose health requires more support and hands-on care.
In a retirement village you live in your own home, manage your own day and choose how much you want to participate in village life. In a rest home, staff are there to assist with the practical realities of daily living.

Why this distinction matters
A retirement village is for people who can live independently and take care of themselves day to day. A rest home is for people whose health requires more hands-on support and care.
Most people move to a retirement village while they are still fit and active, and part of the appeal is the peace of mind that comes with it. Most retirement villages are built with a continuum of care in mind, meaning that as residents' needs change over time, there is a pathway to more support without having to uproot and start somewhere new. That security is one of the main reasons people choose a retirement village rather than staying in their own home.
At Longridge, care is very much part of the long-term vision. We have consented land within the development for a future aged care facility, and the village has been planned with residents' changing needs in mind as the community grows.
